Freedom Riders is a 2010 American historical documentary produced for the PBS series American Experience, chronicling the civil rights activists who rode interstate buses into the segregated South in 1961 to challenge segregation in interstate transportation. Directed by Stanley Nelson Jr. and based on historian Raymond Arsenault's book of the same name, the film was produced by Firelight Media and premiered to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the first Freedom Ride, airing on PBS on May 16, 2011 after funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities. It was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2020.
