FarmVille

Interactive and Networked Media Landmarks

FarmVille is a 2009 social network game developed by Zynga for Facebook, in which players plant, tend and harvest virtual crops and livestock on a farm, earning in-game currency and progress by completing tasks on a regular schedule and by inviting friends to help or visit. At its peak it was played by tens of millions of people, and its Facebook integration, encouraging players to recruit friends for in-game rewards, became a widely studied and imitated model for viral social game design. It is credited with helping establish the free to play social gaming genre and Zynga as a major game publisher.
