Duke Nukem 3D

Interactive and Networked Media Landmarks

Duke Nukem 3D is a 1996 first person shooter developed by 3D Realms, following the wisecracking action hero Duke Nukem through an alien invasion of an American city rendered in the studio's Build engine, which allowed more destructible and vertically varied environments than many contemporaries. The game was notable for its irreverent, adult oriented humor, its frequent references to action movies of the period, and level design that let players interact with a wide range of objects within its environments. It was a significant commercial success and is regarded as one of the defining first person shooters of the mid 1990s, alongside Doom and Quake.
