BioShock

Interactive and Networked Media Landmarks

BioShock is a 2007 first person shooter developed by 2K Boston and 2K Australia and published by 2K Games, in which a plane crash survivor named Jack discovers Rapture, an underwater city built as an isolated utopia by the industrialist Andrew Ryan. Jack fights through Rapture's mutated inhabitants while uncovering how the discovery of a genetic material called ADAM led to the city's collapse. The game is widely credited with showing that a shooter could carry serious philosophical and political themes, and a piece of it was included in the Smithsonian's 2011 exhibition on the art of video games.
