Angry Birds is a 2009 mobile puzzle video game developed by the Finnish company Rovio Entertainment, in which players use a slingshot to launch a cast of flightless birds at structures sheltering green pigs in order to destroy them. Released at an early stage of the mobile app market, the game's simple physics-based mechanic and low price proved unusually well suited to short, casual play sessions on a touchscreen device. Angry Birds became one of the best-selling and most downloaded mobile game franchises in history and is widely credited with helping demonstrate the commercial viability of the mobile gaming market, later expanding into animated films and extensive merchandising.
