Second Life

Interactive and Networked Media Landmarks

Second Life is an online virtual world platform launched in 2003 by Linden Lab, in which users create customizable avatars and interact with one another and with user-built content inside a persistent three-dimensional environment rather than pursuing any fixed game objective. Almost all of the buildings, objects, clothing and other content inside Second Life are created by its own users, who can also buy, sell and trade virtual goods and property using a currency convertible to real money. Second Life is widely regarded as one of the earliest and most influential examples of what later came to be called a metaverse, and at its peak around 2008 it supported an active economy and a wide range of institutional and commercial experiments in virtual space.
