Roblox is an online platform and game creation system launched in 2006 by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel, allowing users to build their own games, called experiences, using the Roblox Studio editor and the Lua programming language, and to play games created by other users across the platform. Rather than being a single game, Roblox functions as an ecosystem of millions of user-made experiences spanning nearly every genre, monetized in part through its virtual currency, Robux, which players can spend on virtual items and which creators can convert into real income. The platform grew explosively in popularity among children and teenagers through the 2010s and 2020s, and by the mid-2020s counted tens of millions of daily active users.
