Dota 2 is a 2013 free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena game developed and published by Valve, built as a standalone sequel to Defense of the Ancients, a community-made mod for Blizzard's Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. Two teams of five players each select a hero from a large roster and cooperate to destroy the opposing team's Ancient, a heavily defended structure at the heart of their base, while gaining strength through experience points and in-game gold spent on items. The game became one of the most watched titles in esports, and its annual championship tournament, The International, has offered crowdfunded prize pools among the largest in esports history.
