Undertale

Interactive and Networked Media Landmarks

Undertale is a 2015 role-playing video game created almost entirely by the American developer Toby Fox, in which a human child who has fallen into an underground world populated by monsters must find a way back to the surface, choosing at every encounter whether to fight the monsters they meet or resolve the conflict peacefully by talking to, befriending or otherwise sparing them. The game tracks these choices across the whole playthrough rather than resetting them at each battle, producing dramatically different storylines, characters and endings depending on how violently or peacefully the player has acted. Fox composed, wrote, programmed and largely illustrated the game himself, and its soundtrack and its subversion of role-playing game conventions around combat and consequence made it one of the most influential independently developed games of the 2010s.
