The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a 2017 action adventure game developed by Nintendo EPD for the Wii U and Nintendo Switch, in which Link wakes after a hundred year sleep to explore a ruined kingdom of Hyrule and defeat Calamity Ganon to save Princess Zelda. The game replaced the series' traditional linear dungeon structure with an open, physics driven world that rewards experimentation over prescribed solutions, an approach critics and later developers described as a rethinking of how open world games could work. It sold more than 35 million copies, became the best selling entry in the Zelda series, and is widely cited as an influence on later open world titles including Genshin Impact and Elden Ring.
