Tennis for Two

Interactive and Networked Media Landmarks

Tennis for Two is a 1958 sports video game designed by American physicist William Higinbotham at Brookhaven National Laboratory, one of the earliest games in the history of video games. Higinbotham created it for the laboratory's annual public exhibition after learning that its Donner Model 30 analog computer could simulate trajectories with wind resistance, designing the game in a few hours before he and technician Robert V. Dvorak built it over three weeks. Displayed on an oscilloscope and played with two custom aluminum controllers, it showed a side-on view of a tennis court, with players adjusting shot angle with a knob and pressing a button to hit the ball over the net.
