Snake is a 1998 video game programmed by Taneli Armanto and built into the Nokia 6110 mobile phone, in which the player steers a growing line representing a snake around a small monochrome screen, collecting dots to gain points while avoiding collision with the screen's edges and the snake's own lengthening body. Distributed simply by being pre-installed on the phone at a time when there was no way for ordinary users to install other software on a mobile device, the game reached an enormous audience purely through Nokia's own handset sales. Snake is widely credited with introducing millions of people to mobile gaming for the first time, and in 2012 the Museum of Modern Art added it to its permanent collection of video games recognized for their design significance.
