Interactive and Networked Media Landmarks

Populous is a video game designed by Peter Molyneux and developed by Bullfrog Productions, released in 1989, in which the player takes the role of a deity who reshapes the land and calls on divine powers to help a population of followers grow and eventually conquer an opposing tribe led by a rival god. It is widely credited as the first game in what came to be called the god game genre, in which the player influences a simulated population indirectly through environmental and supernatural intervention rather than direct control of individual characters.
