League of Legends

Interactive and Networked Media Landmarks

League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena video game developed and published by Riot Games, released in 2009, in which two teams of players each control a unique champion character and cooperate to destroy the opposing team's base while defending their own. The free-to-play game built its revenue model around optional cosmetic purchases rather than pay-to-win advantages, a structure that became widely copied across the games industry. League of Legends grew into one of the largest esports in the world, with an annual World Championship drawing enormous global viewership, and it spawned an expanded media franchise including the animated series Arcane.
