Galaga

Interactive and Networked Media Landmarks

Galaga is a 1981 fixed shooter arcade video game developed by Namco, a sequel to the earlier game Galaxian, in which the player controls a starship firing upward at descending formations of alien insects while trying to avoid or exploit an enemy ability to capture the player's own ship with a tractor beam. Its addition of the capture mechanic, letting a skilled player recover a captured ship to fly two ships at once, was an influential innovation on the fixed shooter formula established by Space Invaders and Galaxian. It became one of the best known and most enduring arcade games of the golden age and has been re-released on numerous later platforms.
