Bel-Air is a 2019 American short fan film written and directed by Morgan Cooper that reimagines the 1990s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as a darker, more dramatic narrative, following Will Smith as he is sent by his mother from Philadelphia's rough streets to live with his uncle and aunt in the affluent Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles after a gang related fight during street basketball. The four minute film was released on YouTube on March 10, 2019, and Will Smith, star of the original series, publicly praised it as a brilliant idea. It catalyzed development of a full television series, with Peacock securing the rights in September 2020 for a two season order and the resulting drama series premiering February 13, 2022, with Cooper and Smith among its executive producers.
