Apex Legends is a free to play battle royale game released in 2019 by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts, combining hero shooter abilities with squad based battle royale combat. It launched with no advance marketing, relying instead on livestreamed reveals timed around the Super Bowl, and drew more than 25 million players in its first week. Its ping based communication system, which let players coordinate without voice chat, was widely praised as a new standard for the genre, and Electronic Arts later made the underlying patent freely available to other developers.
