Resident Evil (1996 video game)

Interactive and Networked Media Landmarks

Resident Evil is a 1996 survival horror video game developed and published by Capcom for the PlayStation, in which players controlling one of two elite task force members, Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine, must escape a mansion overrun by zombies and other monsters after their unit is sent to investigate a series of murders near a fictional Midwestern American mountain community. The game combined fixed camera angles and tank style movement with deliberately limited ammunition, save points and inventory space to create a persistent sense of vulnerability, conventions that became standard across the genre it is widely credited with defining. Its commercial and critical success sparked a long running series and a broader revival of zombie themed media across film and television, and the original game was inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame in 2024.
