King's Quest

Interactive and Networked Media Landmarks

King's Quest is a 1984 adventure video game designed principally by Roberta Williams and published by Sierra On-Line, following a knight sent to recover three magical treasures to restore his kingdom. The game combined onscreen animated graphics with free movement of the player character around the screen and a typed text parser for interaction, a departure from the largely text-only adventure games that preceded it. King's Quest is widely regarded as a landmark in the transition from text-based to graphical adventure games and launched a long-running series.
