Interactive and Networked Media Landmarks

Myst is a graphic adventure video game developed by Cyan, Inc. and released in 1993, in which the player explores a mysterious, seemingly deserted island and other linked worlds, solving environmental puzzles to uncover a family drama recorded in books scattered through the game. Built from pre-rendered still images displayed on CD-ROM rather than a real-time 3D engine, the game's slow, atmospheric exploration and lack of on-screen instructions or violence distinguished it from most action-oriented games of the period. Myst became the best-selling computer game of the 1990s and is widely credited with demonstrating CD-ROM's commercial potential as a distribution format, helping drive its adoption as a standard PC peripheral.
