Metal Gear Solid

Interactive and Networked Media Landmarks

Metal Gear Solid is a 1998 stealth video game directed by Hideo Kojima and released for the PlayStation, following the special operative Solid Snake as he infiltrates the Shadow Moses Island nuclear weapons facility in Alaska to stop a rogue special forces unit called FOXHOUND, led by his own genetic twin Liquid Snake, from launching a nuclear strike. Building on the stealth mechanics of Kojima's earlier Metal Gear games, it emphasized evading rather than confronting enemies and combined this with lengthy cutscenes and voice-acted dialogue that were unusually cinematic for a console game of its era. It sold several million copies and is widely credited with establishing the stealth genre and Kojima's reputation for narrative ambition in mainstream video games.
