Network

Hollywood and English-Language Studio Cinema

Network is a 1976 American satirical drama directed by Sidney Lumet and written by Paddy Chayefsky, centered on a television news anchor, Howard Beale, played by Peter Finch, whose on-air mental breakdown and enraged rants against society are exploited by network executives for ratings. The film's most famous line, delivered by Beale, is I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore. Network won four Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Finch, awarded posthumously, Best Actress for Faye Dunaway and Best Original Screenplay, and it is widely regarded as a landmark satire of television news and corporate media culture.

FAQs

Did Network win Best Picture?

No. Rocky won Best Picture; Network was one of five nominees.

No. The Academy's ceremony record lists Rocky as the Best Picture winner, with Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff as producers. Network was nominated for Best Picture alongside All the President's Men, Bound for Glory and Taxi Driver, so the film that won its acting and writing awards did not take the top prize.
