Harold and Maude

Hollywood and English-Language Studio Cinema

Harold and Maude is a 1971 American romantic black comedy drama film directed by Hal Ashby and released by Paramount Pictures, mixing dark humor with existentialist drama. It follows Harold Chasen, played by Bud Cort, a young man obsessed with death who rejects the life prescribed by his detached mother, played by Vivian Pickles, and who develops a friendship and eventual romantic relationship with Maude, a 79 year old woman played by Ruth Gordon who teaches him to live life fully. The screenplay by Colin Higgins began as his master's thesis for film school, and the film was shot in and around San Francisco and San Mateo, California. Critically and commercially unsuccessful on release, the film did not turn a profit until 1983, but it later developed a cult following, was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 1997, and was ranked 45th on the American Film Institute's 2000 list of the 100 funniest American films.
