A Streetcar Named Desire (1951 film)

Hollywood and English-Language Studio Cinema

A Streetcar Named Desire is a 1951 American drama film directed by Elia Kazan, adapted from Tennessee Williams's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1947 play of the same name, with much of the original Broadway cast and Kazan himself returning for the film. It follows Blanche DuBois, played by Vivien Leigh, a fading Southern belle who moves in with her sister Stella, played by Kim Hunter, and Stella's volatile husband Stanley Kowalski, played by Marlon Brando, in New Orleans, as her fragile grip on reality unravels. Brando's performance, carried over from his celebrated stage role, is widely credited with popularizing Method acting in American film, and the production won three Academy Awards for acting.

FAQs

Which acting awards did A Streetcar Named Desire win at the Academy Awards?

It won Best Actress for Vivien Leigh and both supporting acting awards for Karl Malden and Kim Hunter.

Three of the four acting Oscars went to the film. Vivien Leigh won Best Actress for playing Blanche DuBois, Karl Malden won Best Supporting Actor and Kim Hunter won Best Supporting Actress. That made it the first film to win in three of the acting categories. Marlon Brando earned the first of four consecutive Best Actor nominations for the film but did not win that year.
