Apocalypse Now is a 1979 American film directed by Francis Ford Coppola, loosely adapting Joseph Conrad's novella Heart of Darkness and transposing its journey upriver to the Vietnam War, following a special forces captain sent to find and assassinate a renegade colonel who has set himself up as a warlord deep in the jungle. The film's production in the Philippines was famously troubled, plagued by a typhoon that destroyed sets, a leading actor's heart attack, and a schedule and budget that expanded far beyond original plans, struggles later documented in the film Hearts of Darkness. Apocalypse Now is widely regarded as one of the major American films about the Vietnam War and one of the most ambitious productions of the New Hollywood era.
