All the King's Men (1949 film)

Hollywood and English-Language Studio Cinema

All the King's Men is a 1949 American drama directed by Robert Rossen for Columbia Pictures, adapting Robert Penn Warren's Pulitzer Prize winning novel about the rise and corruption of Willie Stark, an idealistic Southern politician modeled on Louisiana governor Huey Long. The film follows Stark's transformation from a reform candidate into a ruthless, compromised governor. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture, with Broderick Crawford winning Best Actor and Mercedes McCambridge winning Best Supporting Actress in her film debut, and remains, as of the mid-2020s, the most recent Best Picture winner based on a Pulitzer Prize winning novel.
