The Shape of Water is a 2017 romantic fantasy film directed by Guillermo del Toro, set in Baltimore in 1962 during the Cold War. It follows Elisa Esposito, a mute janitor working at a secretive government laboratory, who discovers a captive amphibious humanoid creature being studied there, forms a bond with him, and works with her friends to help him escape before he can be destroyed. Sally Hawkins starred as Elisa opposite Doug Jones as the creature, with Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Octavia Spencer in supporting roles. The film won four Academy Awards at the 2018 ceremony, including Best Picture and Best Director for del Toro, becoming only the second fantasy film to win Best Picture after The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
