Moonlight

Moonlight is a 2016 drama directed by Barry Jenkins, following Chiron, a Black gay man growing up in Miami, across three chapters of his life spanning childhood, adolescence and early adulthood. Set against the backdrop of the crack epidemic, the film traces his relationships with a neighborhood drug dealer who becomes an unlikely father figure and with a childhood friend, as Chiron struggles to reconcile his identity with the pressures of his surroundings. The three chapters were played by Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders and Trevante Rhodes, with Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris and Janelle Monae in supporting roles. Moonlight won the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 2017 ceremony along with Best Supporting Actor for Ali and Best Adapted Screenplay, a win remembered in part for the announcement error in which La La Land was mistakenly named the winner onstage before the mistake was corrected.
