12 Years a Slave is a 2013 historical drama directed by Steve McQueen, based on the 1853 memoir of the same name by Solomon Northup. It follows Northup, a free Black man living in New York, who is kidnapped and sold into slavery, and recounts the twelve years he spent forced to labor on Louisiana plantations before he was able to prove his freedom and return home. Chiwetel Ejiofor starred as Northup, with a cast including Michael Fassbender, Lupita Nyong'o, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti, Sarah Paulson and Brad Pitt. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 2014 ceremony along with Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Nyong'o, and McQueen's win made him the first Black producer and the first Black director of a Best Picture winner.
