Brokeback Mountain is a 2005 American independent neo-Western romantic drama, produced by Focus Features and River Road Entertainment and directed by Ang Lee, that follows the decades-long relationship between two cowboys, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, which begins while they are herding sheep together in the American West. The film received widespread critical acclaim and grossed more than 178 million dollars worldwide against a budget of 14 million dollars, winning Best Director for Lee at the Academy Awards, though its loss of Best Picture to Crash prompted lasting controversy over the decision. It was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2018 and has since been ranked among the finest films of the 2000s by numerous critics and publications.
