Chicago is a 2002 American musical black comedy crime film directed by Rob Marshall, based on the 1975 stage musical of the same name, itself adapted from a 1926 play. Set in Chicago during the Jazz Age, it follows two women, Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, who compete for fame while awaiting trial for murder. The ensemble cast is led by Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere, with a screenplay by Bill Condon and music by John Kander and Fred Ebb. It won six Academy Awards at the 2003 ceremony, including Best Picture, the first musical to win the award since Oliver! in 1968, and grossed more than 300 million dollars worldwide.
