The Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 American drama directed by Frank Darabont, based on Stephen King's novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, starring Tim Robbins as a banker wrongly convicted of murder and Morgan Freeman as a fellow inmate who narrates his decades-long friendship and eventual escape from Shawshank State Penitentiary. The film underperformed at the box office on its initial theatrical release but found a large audience through home video and television broadcast in the years afterward.
