The Piano

Hollywood and English-Language Studio Cinema

The Piano is a 1993 film written and directed by Jane Campion, starring Holly Hunter as a mute Scottish woman who travels to a remote part of New Zealand with her young daughter, played by Anna Paquin, following an arranged marriage to a settler played by Sam Neill, and Harvey Keitel as a neighboring settler. Hunters character communicates through playing the piano and through sign language, with her daughter often serving as interpreter. The film won the Palme dOr at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival, making Campion the first woman to win the award outright, and at the Academy Awards it won Best Actress for Hunter, Best Supporting Actress for Paquin and Best Original Screenplay for Campion.
