Braveheart is a 1995 American epic historical war drama directed and produced by Mel Gibson, who also stars as the Scottish warrior William Wallace during the First War of Scottish Independence. Adapted for the screen by Randall Wallace from Blind Harry's fifteenth century epic poem about Wallace, the film also stars Sophie Marceau, Patrick McGoohan and Catherine McCormack. Praised for its battle scenes, production design and score despite criticism of its historical accuracy, it won five Academy Awards at the 68th ceremony, including Best Picture and Best Director for Gibson.
