Boyz n the Hood

Boyz n the Hood is a 1991 American coming-of-age drama, the feature directorial debut of John Singleton, who also wrote the screenplay and was, at 24, the youngest person and the first African American ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director. Starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Laurence Fishburne, with early film roles for Ice Cube, Morris Chestnut and Regina King, the film follows Tre Styles as he moves to live with his father in South Central Los Angeles and reconnects with childhood friends amid the pervasive gang culture of the neighborhood. Distributed by Columbia Pictures on a budget of roughly six million dollars, it grossed 57.5 million dollars in North America and received Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.
