Before Sunrise is a 1995 romantic drama directed by Richard Linklater and co-written with Kim Krizan, the first film in Linklater's Before trilogy. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy star as Jesse and Celine, who meet on a train, disembark together in Vienna, and spend one night walking and talking through the city before parting the next morning. Produced by Castle Rock Entertainment, Detour Filmproduction and Filmhaus Films, the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 1995, grossed 22.5 million dollars worldwide, was praised for its screenplay, direction and performances, and was selected for the National Film Registry's 2025 class.
