American Me is a 1992 crime drama and the directorial debut of Edward James Olmos, who also stars as Montoya Santana, a character inspired by Mexican Mafia figure Rodolfo Cadena. Written by Floyd Mutrux and Desmond Nakano and produced by YOY Productions, Olmos Productions and the Sean Daniel Company for distributor Universal Pictures, the film gives a fictionalized account of the founding and growth of the Mexican Mafia within the California prison system from the 1950s through the 1980s. It received favorable reviews but underperformed commercially, and the Library of Congress selected it for the National Film Registry in 2024.
