Rain Man is a 1988 American road drama directed by Barry Levinson and written by Barry Morrow and Ronald Bass, starring Tom Cruise as a self-centered wheeler-dealer who discovers that his estranged father has bequeathed his fortune to an institutionalized brother, Raymond, an autistic savant played by Dustin Hoffman. Morrow developed the character of Raymond after meeting the real-life savant Kim Peek. The film won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival and became the highest grossing release of 1988, going on to win four Academy Awards at the 61st ceremony, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Hoffman.
