In the Aftermath, full title In the Aftermath: Angels Never Sleep, is a 1988 American post-apocalyptic science fantasy film directed by Carl Colpaert and distributed by New World Pictures, built around footage from Mamoru Oshii's 1985 Japanese animated film Angel's Egg, which the studio had acquired inexpensively through a distribution agreement. New live action sequences were shot and combined with the existing animated footage to tell the story of an angelic being sent to a radiation scarred Earth to judge whether humanity deserves salvation, who develops an unexpected connection with Frank, a soldier struggling to survive amid the devastation. The filmmakers have said they found the source anime incomprehensible on its own and built the live action wrapper to give English speaking audiences a coherent narrative.
