Heaven' s Gate is a 1980 American epic Western film written and directed by Michael Cimino, starring Kris Kristofferson, Christopher Walken, John Hurt, Sam Waterston, Brad Dourif, Isabelle Huppert, Jeff Bridges and Joseph Cotten. Loosely based on the Johnson County War, it depicts a dispute between wealthy land barons and European immigrant settlers in 1890s Wyoming. Production faced severe cost overruns and negative press, ultimately costing nearly 32 to 44 million dollars against box office earnings of only about 3.5 million dollars, and the film was initially condemned as one of the worst in cinema history before later critical reassessments proved more favorable.
