The Empire Strikes Back is a 1980 American science fiction film directed by Irvin Kershner, based on a story by George Lucas with a screenplay by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan, and is the second film released in the Star Wars series. Set three years after the original Star Wars, it follows Luke Skywalker training under the Jedi master Yoda while the Rebel Alliance, including Han Solo, Princess Leia and Chewbacca, evades pursuit by Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire. Its confrontation between Luke and Vader, culminating in Vader's revelation of Luke's parentage, became one of the most widely referenced moments in American popular cinema, and the film is frequently ranked among the best sequels ever made.
