Platoon

Hollywood and English-Language Studio Cinema

Platoon is a 1986 American war film written and directed by Oliver Stone, drawing on his own experience as an infantry soldier in Vietnam to follow a young volunteer caught between two sergeants, one brutal and one humane, whose conflict comes to represent a struggle for the moral character of the unit itself. The film was praised on release for depicting combat with a visceral, disorienting intensity that departed from more heroic prior war films. It won four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, and is widely regarded as one of the most influential American films made about the Vietnam War.
