Full Metal Jacket is a 1987 film directed by Stanley Kubrick, adapted from Gustav Hasford's novel The Short-Timers, structured in two halves: the first following a platoon of Marine recruits through the brutal Parris Island boot camp of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, played by former drill instructor R. Lee Ermey, ending in one recruit's breakdown, and the second following surviving recruit Joker, played by Matthew Modine, as a war correspondent during the 1968 Tet Offensive in Vietnam. Its unflinching depiction of military dehumanization, most memorably in Hartman's boot-camp tirades, made it one of the most quoted and studied Vietnam War films. It received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
