The Godfather is a 1972 film directed by Francis Ford Coppola, adapted by Coppola and Mario Puzo from Puzo's own novel, following the Corleone family of New York organized crime figures as the aging patriarch Vito Corleone, played by Marlon Brando, cedes control to his reluctant youngest son Michael, played by Al Pacino, after a failed assassination attempt draws the family into a gang war. Its deliberate, operatic pacing and its portrayal of the Corleones as a business enterprise as much as a criminal one reshaped how American film depicted organized crime. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and Brando won Best Actor, at the 45th Academy Awards, and it is widely regarded as one of the greatest American films ever made.
