The Black Stallion (1979 film)

Hollywood and English-Language Studio Cinema

The Black Stallion is a 1979 American adventure film based on Walter Farley's 1941 children's novel of the same name, adapted for the screen by Melissa Mathison, Jeanne Rosenberg and William D. Wittliff, and directed by Carroll Ballard in his feature directorial debut. Set beginning in 1946, it tells the story of Alec Ramsey, a boy shipwrecked on a deserted island with a wild Arabian stallion he befriends, and their return home to enter a race against two champion horses. It stars Kelly Reno in his film debut alongside Teri Garr, Hoyt Axton, Michael Higgins and Mickey Rooney, with the Arabian horse Cass Ole playing the title stallion, and features music by Carmine Coppola, father of executive producer Francis Ford Coppola. In 2002 the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.
