M*A*S*H (1970 film)

M*A*S*H is a 1970 American satirical black comedy war film directed by Robert Altman for 20th Century Fox, adapted from Richard Hooker's 1968 novel MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors with a screenplay by Ring Lardner Jr. Set among medical personnel at a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War, the film's tone was widely read as commentary on the ongoing Vietnam War, and it starred Donald Sutherland, Elliott Gould, Tom Skerritt and Sally Kellerman. It won the Palme d'Or at the 1970 Cannes Film Festival and received five Academy Award nominations, winning for Best Adapted Screenplay, though the Army and Air Force initially barred it from military bases for reflecting unfavorably on the armed services. In 1996 it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, and it inspired the long-running television series of the same name.
