Cooley High

Cooley High is a 1975 American independent coming of age comedy drama film following two high school seniors and best friends, Leroy Preach Jackson, played by Glynn Turman, and Richard Cochise Morris, played by Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs. Written by Eric Monte and directed by Michael Schultz, it was shot primarily in Chicago and became a major box office hit, grossing over 13 million dollars, with a soundtrack built around many Motown hits. In a fortieth anniversary retrospective in 2015, NPR called it a classic of black cinema and a touchstone for filmmakers including John Singleton and Spike Lee, and in 2021 the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry as culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.
