Cabaret (1972 film)

Cabaret is a 1972 American musical drama film directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse from a screenplay by Jay Presson Allen, based on the 1966 stage musical by Joe Masteroff, John Kander and Fred Ebb, itself drawn from the 1951 play I Am a Camera by John Van Druten and Christopher Isherwood's 1939 novel Goodbye to Berlin, starring Liza Minnelli, Michael York, Helmut Griem, Marisa Berenson and Joel Grey. Unlike the stage version, in which characters sing to express emotion and advance the plot, the film's musical numbers are almost entirely diegetic, performed inside the club by the characters themselves, with the exception of Tomorrow Belongs to Me, a nationalistic song sung by a Nazi youth and a German crowd. Released in the United States on February 13, 1972 by Allied Artists, it earned more than 42 million dollars against a 4.6 million dollar production budget and won eight Academy Awards including Best Director for Fosse, Best Actress for Minnelli and Best Supporting Actor for Grey, a record for a film not honored for Best Picture. In 1995 the Library of Congress selected Cabaret for preservation in the National Film Registry as culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.
