The Exorcist (1973 film)

Hollywood and English-Language Studio Cinema

The Exorcist is a 1973 American horror film directed by William Friedkin, adapted by William Peter Blatty from his own 1971 novel of the same name. It follows a young girl, played by Linda Blair, who appears to become possessed by a demonic entity, and the two Catholic priests, played by Max von Sydow and Jason Miller, who attempt to save her through the ritual of exorcism, while her mother, played by Ellen Burstyn, searches for help. Its unflinching depiction of possession and graphic content drew both controversy and enormous box-office success on release, and it is widely regarded as one of the most influential horror films ever made.
