Daisies (film)

World and International Narrative Cinema

Daisies (Sedmikrásky) is a 1966 Czechoslovak satirical comedy co-written and directed by Věra Chytilová and widely regarded as a milestone of the Czechoslovak New Wave. Two young women, both named Marie and played by Jitka Cerhová and Ivana Karbanová, decide that since the world is spoiled they will be spoiled too, and they spend the film manipulating older men into buying them meals, disrupting a nightclub and finally wrecking a banquet table. Chytilová described the picture as a necrologue about a negative way of life; it is read as a satire of bourgeois decadence and a critique of communism, censorship and patriarchy, and it was banned from cinemas and from export in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. Made at the Barrandov studios with cinematography by Jaroslav Kučera, it was released on 30 December 1966, and the Czech Film and Television Union gave it the Trilobit Award for the best Czechoslovak film of 1966.
